jersyIn earlier days, athletic apparel fabrics and materials were limited to hockey sweaters and woolen jerseys. The choices were quite limited then, but now things have rapidly changed as many new fabrics are being experimented to ensure the comfort of the athlete. The commonly used fabric these days are of synthetic nature so as to provide ease to the person during competition.
One major change that has happened over the years is how the teams have started opting for comfort over durability. Earlier days, no good quality polyester was available and the ones that were available were prone to be too hot and sticky. So then, athletes had no other alternative than to go for cotton. However even though cotton based apparels was comfortable it never lasted long. Now there is a major improvement in the texture and quality of polyester, as those fabrics are now mostly made out of double knit, mesh, moisture wicking, poly-cotton, dazzle and air-knit yarns. Unlike before, you could even easily customize your jerseys, pants and practice uniforms using any desired fabric of your choice now.
Now let us take a look at the few good polyester fabrics:
Moisture Wicking: This is one of the most popular choices of athletes. This fabric promises a long durability without any compromising the comfort. The fabric is made of a supreme kind of yarns without holes. This would repel moisture from the skin and makes it evaporate easily. It has been a huge favorite of players who belong to warm weather. Even though the commercial names are different, dry fit, cool mesh, cool- max, rapid dry and wicking mesh, the product is the same.
Double knit polyester: This would be the perfect choice for teams if they want a fabric that lasts long. So usually most of pro softball/baseball teams and collegiate teams opt for double knitted outfits. This was also quite popular among the hockey team jerseys which are being now replaced with air knit fabrics.
Polyester Mesh: This was considered to be the perfect alternative before the coming of wicking or double –knit polyester. These fabrics help in facilitating air to the skin thereby ensuring comfort to the individuals. Mesh configurations could be of different varieties such as tricot mesh, mini –mesh or 150 denier mesh. The weigh and hole size configuration also differs with each of these mesh.
Poly cotton: Poly cotton fabrics are a blend of cotton and polyester. Though these fabrics look exactly like cotton, they last longer and are easier to maintain. Another advantage of this fabric is its wrinkle free nature.
Air Knitted polyester: This polyester is the popular choice and has replaced all other fabrics for sports jerseys. This fabric is made of polyester with minute holes often as a pattern. These holes help in the fabric to let out the air without compromising on the durability that is required for the teams. Most of the popular brands in the market use this air –knit fabric while manufacturing their signature outfits.
